HARD LABOUR, INDONESIAN STYLE. There are no hard-hats or steel-toed boots on this jungle site straddling the border between East and Central Java. Work-place accidents and impending cancers are irrelevant to an illegal workforce that shuts up or walks off.

Glassy-eyed workers stand shin-deep in the crude oil, drinking in its toxic brown smoke from the open fires of the on-site distilleries.

The executive producers of this tragedy – North American ExxonMobil and Indonesia's oil giant, Pertamina – have long since abandoned this pocket of primary forest to forage in pastures new, the wells sucked dry, the tar-coated throats of the narrowing pits now squeezed by gangs of Sisyphean bit-players milking an extra 125 barrels a day from the expired earth.

The landscape is belligerent, malignant, cancerous.

The earth is dead.
