The Old Bali Blog « East-West car crash: Balinese man strangles woman on nude cruise liner
Stinging words indeed.
A 31-year-old American woman goes on a 'Bare Necessities' nude cruise on the MS Nieuw Amsterdam courtesy of Holland America Line.
On Valentine's Day morning, Ketut Pujayasa, 28, from Buleleng in Bali, knocks repeatedly on her stateroom door to rouse her from a virtuous slumber.
She calls him a son-of-a-bitch for the rude awakening.
Ketut serves her breakfast - and vows to return later to punch her in the face for the throwaway barb.
Lobbing deeply derisive insults about one's parentage might be completely standard in the West's anaesthetised mind. In Asia, it hurts. And it can get you into an awful lot of trouble.
A laptop, a 'phone cord and a curling iron later, Ketut's in chains waiting for the local sheriff's verdict in Fort Lauderdale.
The last word from 'Bare Necessities' runner Holland America Line:
'We continue to work closely with authorities to understand how this incident occurred, and what additional actions we can take to help ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.'
Well, it doesn't take a great deal of understanding. And to prevent such a mad event happening again?
Let's take a moment.
i. Employ Western hired-hands on Western wages who understand the nude bit and do away with the cheap, sensitive, Eastern hired help.
ii. Employ budget-priced, Eastern hired-help and provide your buck-naked lodgers with a flyer on how to treat a fellow human being with the barest of decorum.
