The Old Bali Blog « Tears in Paradise: A photo exhibition of Bali's mentally ill
You don't have long to catch the unusually gritty photo exhibition 'Tears of Paradise' that showcases the pitiful plight of Bali's mentally-ill who don't make it to hospital - many are caged or shackled to their beds in what can only be described as a personal hell.
Some 350 out of Bali's approximately 9,000 mentally-ill live in conditions similar to this - family stigma, a lack of knowledge regarding care and the disease's cultural links to demons and witchcraft all contribute to the problem.
The exhibition - held at Bentara Budaya Bali in Gianyar from August 19 to 24 - is curated by Yudha Bantono and sponsored by the Suryani Institute for Mental Health.
