The Old Bali Blog « Strictly off the menu: Magic Mushrooms illegal on Bali

If your idea of fun in Kuta was choking through a mouthful of magic mushrooms, washing them down with half-a-dozen beers and tearing around town on your rented motorbike, think again.

Despite Indonesia having some of the toughest anti-drug laws in the world, magic mushrooms had always strangely avoided the ban.

Until now.

Bali Police have sent out a strong warning that they won't tolerate them anymore. (Magic mushrooms used to be openly promoted in scores of food stalls and restaurants around the Kuta area, and served up in juices and omelettes.)

Psychedelic Psilocybin mushrooms have now been included as a Type 1 narcotic in the Republic, along with heroin and marijuana - and consuming the drug from January 2015 will earn you between four and 12 years in prison. Selling will get you between five and 20 years.

Which is a great thing.

No more tourists jumping to their deaths off balconies, or breaking their girlfriend's jaw.
