Life, News, Photography and Reviews from Ubud: The Apple of Bali's Eye

The Old Bali Blog « Australia vs. Indonesia, Round 9: Handbags at Dawn

If there was any glimmer of hope that the Bali Nine's Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran might be granted a stay of execution - well, the lights just went out.

Australia's failing Tony Abbott - in a bid to shame Indonesia into granting the heroin smugglers an 11th-hour reprieve - manages to insult 260 million Indonesians by reminding them of the billion-dollar aid package gifted by Auzzo in the wake of the 2004 tsunami.

The man should know that making an Asian lose face is the last thing you want to pull out of your diplomatic handbag. Abbott has effectively rubber-stamped their executions.

The Indonesian response on the streets?

'#CoinsForAbbott' and '#CoinsForAustralia' - populist displays of disgust as pocket-change is collected to pay him back.

The slap back?

'#BoycottBali' spreads through Australian social media circles.

Hang on. That's a great idea! I'm going to start a new Twitter campaign:

#AndNowForSomeBalineseCulture.
